American Association for Higher Education (AAHE) Portfolio Clearinghouse A searchable collection of portfolio projects from around the world. "This database is a tool for institutions researching the ever-growing number of portfolio programs in use at institutions of higher education and a resource for individuals looking to the portfolio as a means of assessing student learning on the student, faculty, or institutional levels...Current records focus primarily on student portfolios, both paper and electronic, used for assessment and reflection, although some information on faculty and institutional portfolios is included and will be developed more extensively in the future."

Undergraduate Assessment & Program Review Undergraduate Research Academy This site is full of assessment information and links and is housed by Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) - The NSSE is designed to obtain, on an annual basis, information from scores of colleges and universities nationwide about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results will provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.  The NSSE is an initiative of The Pew Charitable Trusts.   The survey was designed by a national research design team chaired by Peter Ewell of the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems.  A number of the UUPP institutions will be participating in the second pilot of the study in Fall 1999 and the national release in Spring 2000.  The University of Massachusetts-Boston participated in the initial pilot of the survey during the Spring of 1999.

Portrait of Universities with Metropolitan Alliances (PUMA) - This web site was created to support the ongoing development of a data exchange among a set of urban and metropolitan universities that seeks to expand the availability of information that articulates the contribution of these institutions to their metropolitan regions, their states, and to the nation.

ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation - Site "seeks to provide 1) balanced information concerning educational assessment and 2) resources to encourage responsible test use." Includes a large repository of on-line, full-text materials in the ERIC/AE On-Line Library (Papers)  section and a list of links related to Assessment and Evaluation on the Internet

Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory: Assessment and Evaluation - Site includes a large bibliography on many assessment topics, including portfolios.  An alternative assessment toolkit and resource library are also available.

U.S. Legislative Branch - Sponsored by the Library of Congress. Current information on Members of Congress and how to reach them, current legislation, voting records, calendars and schedules.

U.S. Executive Branch - Contains links to Executive Offices of the President, Executive Agencies and Independent Agencies. Link from here to the Department of Education and related programs.

U.S. Judicial Branch - Searchable full-text versions of U.S. Code, Public Laws and Federal Register from 1994 to present. Includes Supreme Court Opinions from 1990 to current, and selected pre-1990 opinions, including leading Opinions from 1793 to present. Circuit Court Opinions from 1994 to present. Links to State Court Decisions, Court Rules and Law Journal sites, some with searchable indexes.

Thomas: Legislative Information on the Internet - Also sponsored by the Library of Congress. Current information and records back to 103rd Congress (1993-94). Congressional Mega-Sites Plus - Listing of "major sources for many facets of legislative information. If you don't know where to find what you're looking for, start here. " Includes link to the University of Michigan Documents Center which has good information about researching Legislative Histories.

U.S. Department of Education - Description of current programs and efforts. Includes some full-text publications available for searching. A Database of U.S. Department of Education Publications in ERIC is offered.

Federal Bureau of the Census - Statistics gathered from the official government census and in the interim. The Subjects A-Z section lists all areas of analysis available on the web. Most documents available for download are in PDF format and require an Adobe Acrobat Reader to be read.

Portfolios

Portland State University Center for Academic Excellence - Includes a virtual tutorial for faculty on developing professional portfolios, with some helpful tips on thinking about portfolio organization, documentation, etc.

Randy Bass's course portfolio page - Bass is a literature professor at Georgetown University, and is doing some interesting work with hyperlinked course portfolios and with web-based student assignments. While this site is still under construction, it demonstrates some ways of structuring portfolio information, and explicitly addresses ways of organizing web materials in the sections on student web-based assignments. Bass is one of the plenary speakers at the San Diego conference. If you subscribe to the Chronicle of Higher Education, you may also wish to read the related article on Bass in the February 15 information technology update at http://chronicle.com/infotech/ .

  • Illinois State University's Department of Accounting - This electronic student portfolio system "allows students to build a collection of World Wide Web multimedia 'documents' that shows how each student is interweaving career planning, formal classroom work, and student life activities into a unique educational experience."

Bowling Green Planning Support Indicators - The BGSU Office of Institutional Research has built a series of indicators based upon the interaction of inputs, processes, outcomes, and the external environment.  The model is based on work done by Michael E. Moore of Georgia State University.

Chronicle of Higher Education: Internet Resources - This newly-revamped section describes World-Wide Web sites of interest to people in higher education. The Chronicle plans to add many more resources in the weeks ahead.

Samford University Center for Problem Based Learning (PBL) - The Samford University Center for Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is soliciting applications from prospective portfolio developers for PBL Portfolio Peer Review mini-grants. The $750 mini-grants will support the development of course portfolios that describe the implementation and assessment of PBL approaches in various disciplines.

The City University of New York: An Institution Adrift - The New York City Mayor's Advisory Task Force on the City University of New York issued this report on June 7, 1999.  The investigation examined CUNY's budgeting, funding and financial management, reviewed the university's governance processes, its open admissions policies and remedial education programs. The task force examined the relationship between the public schools and the need for remedial education at CUNY and considered ways in which third parties could provide remedial education. For those with an electronic subscription, The Chronicle of Higher Education had an article about the CUNY report in its June 11, 1999 issue.

National Teaching and Learning Forum - Web query system allowing the generation of faculty salary reports from nearly 4,000 institutions based on IPEDS data. Database can also be used to study differences based on gender in faculty salaries and the study of ethnic minority group representation.

John Minter Associates, Inc. - Commercially produced site listing the company's products stemming from IPEDS Financial information.  There is information about ordering publications, but no data available for viewing or download.

Horizon - "The Environmental Scanning Publication for Educational Leaders."  Published by Horizon, an environmental scanning group whose mission  is to "inform educators about the challenges that they will face in a changing world and steps they can take to meet these challenges."

Internet Resources for Institutional Research (Link Map page) - Large list of higher education internet sites.  Link Map page categorizes the numerous sites by topic.   This excellent resource includes links to higher education Associations and Publications, among many others.

The Pew Charitable Trusts

National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education -  The Center is directed by Pat Callan of the project's National Advisory Board (NAB).  The Center produces a publication called National Crosstalk on higher education policy issues, which is available on-line. The current issue includes an article on academic audits, which will be a topic for us in Portland, and an article by Gordon Davies (also a member of the NAB) on public education’s responsibilities for civic engagement.
